　江戸時代のはじめ、大場氏は彦根藩井伊家領世田谷（2千3百石余）の代官職を務め、明治維新に至るまで世襲していました。この屋敷地はその代官役所として使用した居宅を含む屋敷跡です。
　大場氏は中世に世田谷城主であった吉良家の重臣でしたが、天正18年（1590）の豊臣秀吉による小田原攻めにより、北条方についた主家吉良家が没落すると、世田谷新宿（上町）に留まり帰農していました。寛永10年（1633）、井伊家が世田谷領15箇村（後に20箇村）を拝領した際に、代官に起用されました。以後、明治4年（1871）の廃藩置県に至るまで代官職を継ぎ、領内を統治してきました。
　屋敷は江戸中期の建築であり、代官所の中心である母屋は約70坪（約231.4㎡）、萱葺きの寄棟造りで、茅葺きの表門、土蔵、白州跡などの一部が今も現存し、往時の代官屋敷の面影を伝えています。

 At the beginning of the Edo Period,Oba clan served as magistrates of Setagaya (over 2,300 koku;1 koku is approximately 180.39 L,based on a unit uniformly used as of 1690),which was a domain of Ii clan of Hikne;they took over this function generation by generation until the Meiji Restoration.The premises are the remains of thier residence,including residentiak buildings used as a magisstrate's office.
 Oba clan issued important vassls of Kira clan who were lords of Setagaya castle during the Middle Ages,however,when their lord,Kira clan supported Hojo clan ofOdaawara at the time of military campaigns led by Toyotomi Hideyashi against Odawara and the clan was brought to ruin,the Oba clan remained in Setagaya Shinjuku (Kamimachi),so that they areareduced to farmers.They are appointed as magistrate for Ii clan of at the time of granting 15 villages (later 20 villages) of Setagaya area  to the clan in 1633.Subsequently,they took over the position of the magistrate and engaged in the government of the villages until the abolition of the feudal domain system from the Edo Period in 1871.
 The residence was from the Middle Edo Period;the main building which was the center of  the magistrate's office is ca.70 tsubo(ca.231.4㎡) large,with a thatched and hipped roof.Main gate with a hipped roof and a storehouse  covered by nud daub,and a part of remains of courtroom are still extant in order to represent the images of the residence at the time of the magistrates.

　　重要文化財　大場家住宅
　この住宅は、大場家7代六兵衛盛政が元文2年（1737）と宝暦3年（1753）の2度にわたる工事によって完成したものであります。大場家は、元文4年（1739）から幕末まで彦根藩世田谷領の代官職を世襲したのでその役宅としても使用されていました。
　江戸中期上層民家の遺構をよく保存する建物として、主屋及び表門の2棟が、昭和53年（1978）1月21日国の十四文化財に指定されました。
